The European Commission has published its 7th Implementation Report (released on 4 February) assessing the state of water in the EU and calling on Member States to take stronger measures to improve water management by 2027.
The report evaluates the Water Framework Directive, Floods Directive, and Marine Strategy Framework Directive, highlighting both progress and challenges in protecting Europe’s water resources. Despite some improvements over the past six years, the findings indicate that greater efforts are needed to enhance freshwater quality, manage flood risks, and safeguard marine ecosystems.
With concrete insights on how to achieve EU targets for water quality and quantity, the reports will also contribute to shaping the upcoming Water Resilience Strategy.
