Large-scale hydrological models are simplified mathematical representations of the water cycle, precipitation, evapotranspiration, soil moisture, groundwater, and river flow, all connected. What makes them powerful is scale: instead of relying on a handful of monitoring stations, they simulate the full water cycle continuously, across an entire domain, a country, a river basin, or even the whole of Europe. This webinar introduces you to the role of large-scale hydrological simulations, and specifically, what kind of decisions they can support for water management and climate adaptation. Your will also learn about concrete examples of operational systems using this approach today.
Learning Objectives
- Demonstrate how large-scale simulations support decision-making by quantifying impacts of climate variability and change on water resources
- Illustrate different types of management decisions that can be informed by large-scale simulations.
Target Audience
- Water professionals, water planners, anyone dealing with river basin modelling or policy
Keywords
large-scale models, decision support, water management, EFAS – European Flood Awareness System, Wasser-Monitor
