STARS4Water develops river-basin information services that combine different data sources to provide information that stakeholders can use in planning and decision-making. Groundwater is a particularly difficult part of the water system to represent because it is largely hidden from direct observation and available datasets have different strengths and limitations.
Continental-scale groundwater models provide spatially complete and consistent coverage across a basin, but they can contain substantial local biases, sometimes amounting to tens of metres in simulated groundwater levels. Monitoring networks based on piezometers provide much more accurate information on actual local groundwater conditions, but observations are available only at a limited number of locations.
This webinar shows how these two sources of information can be combined rather than treated separately. It presents a spatiotemporal kriging approach that conditions a continental land-surface model with local piezometer observations.
Learning Objectives
- Understand why continental-scale models need local conditioning before basin-scale use
- Apply residual kriging in space and time to correct a gridded model with point observations
- Estimate, fit and read a space–time variogram, and choose a covariance model
- Convert corrected water levels into a storage variable — and flag where that conversion is weak
Target Audience
- Hydrogeologists, water-resource analysts and modellers working at basin scale
Keywords
