STARS4Water partner Deltares presented the project at the session on Transboundary water management: tools and approaches supporting cooperation and peace (Session ID 12065). This session was part of the SIWI Seminar Series on the management of shared water resources for peace and cooperation
The key topics discussed during this session included:
- Innovative and integrative approaches for improved transboundary cooperation, addressing outdated governance and organizational structures.
- Overly political, outdated top-down frameworks with no mechanisms to engage stakeholders.
- Incomplete or obsolete science-based diagnostics and monitoring systems.
- Lack of protocols for natural disaster response (droughts and floods) and conflict resolution.
- Insufficient basic infrastructure and development of unsustainable projects; need for financing and sustainable project development.
The participants gained a better understanding of the challenges climate change poses to peace and cooperation over shared water, learned about tools and strategies for peaceful shared water management based on case studies and expert knowledge, and obtained insights into the latest technological advancements and governance strategies that support effective transboundary water management.
