SUMMARY:12th World General Assembly of INBO 2024 - Thematic Session "4.B. Data and information for climate change adaptation in basins"
DESCRIPTION:STARS4Water in collaboration with INBO is organizing session 4B on “Data and information for climate change adaptation in basins” \nSession Description\n \nAccording to IPCC\, worldwide freshwater resources are under increasing pressures of rapidly intensifying climate change effects putting the availability and quality of water resources and socio-economic developments at risk. Adequate management of these resources is important for human well-being\, ecosystem health and water-related economic sectors. Conflicting interests and competing demands (sectoral water uses -agriculture\, industry\, domestic uses\, etc. but also water needs of the ecosystems) can lead to tensions and disputes. To face this and identify solutions\, better data for quantitative assessments and information on the projected impacts of climate change on the water resources availability and water-related risks for society\, ecology and economic sectors are needed. \nAt the same time new data services and digital tools become rapidly available that can support this endeavor. However\, many of the new data sources and digital tools are still in the scientific domain\, while they can be useful in the daily operations of RBOs to fulfill their task and mandates. \nThis session will present the interest and potential of new data services and digital tools to meet the challenges of basin organizations (included those provided by the STARS4Water project and its Metadataportal). It will also be an opportunity to survey basin management stakeholders on the data required\, according to them\, for water resources assessment and planning

SUMMARY:Workshop on “Data-driven hydrology and machine learning algorithms for water management and risk assessment”
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a 2-day Workshop on “Data-driven hydrology and machine learning algorithms for water management and risk assessment” organized by the STARS4Water and DRHYM (data-driven hybrid hydrological models) projects. \nThe hydrological community has been paying particular attention to the advantages of using machine-learned hydrologic models or model components in the last years. Their aims span over a variety of open opportunities for research and operations in the water sector. From input data processing to model output prediction\, novel techniques have been explored to support a large number of hydrological applications\, such as: forecasting of extreme events (floods and droughts)\, predicting water use patterns and projecting future water demand\, detecting patterns in reservoir management and predicting releases\, regionalizing hydrological model’s parameters over large river basins\, regionalizing groundwater information at the catchment scale. \nThis workshop aims to bring together hydrologists and data-driven experts to explore pathways to bring new data sets and data-driven modelling approaches from hydrologic research to the more practical and operational planning level in river basins. By participating in this workshop\, you will: (1) gain an understanding of differentiable models\, (2) develop hands-on experience building and applying deep learning models for rainfall-runoff modeling\, and (3) get a feeling for the role of architectures and data. Most importantly\, however\, the workshop will provide you with a good foundation for continued exploration of deep learning in environmental applications. \nWhen: Wednesday 24 April 13:30 CEST to Thursday 25 April 13:30 CEST \nWhere: INRAE\,  1 rue Pierre-Gilles de Gennes\, 92160 Antony\, France \nParticipants: STARS4Water & DRHYM partners and registered attendees \nFormat: On-site & Online (Session I and Session II) & On-site only (Session III) \n  \nPROGRAMME \nHere you will find further details about the Programme \n  \nREGISTRATION\nSecure your spot for this event\, by registering here. \n

SUMMARY:STARS4Water Special Session in the 40th IAHR World Congress: Stakeholder driven unlocking of data for river basin management
DESCRIPTION:Theme:\nAccording to IPCC\, worldwide freshwater resources are under increasing pressures of rapidly intensifying climate change effects putting the availability and quality of water resources and socio-economic developments at risk. To face this\, better quantitative assessments and projections of the impacts of climate change on the water resources availability and water-related risks for society\, ecology and economic sectors are needed\, and the activities of the STARS4Water project have the ambition to provide this (EU Grant Agreement 101059372). To this end\, STARS4Water develops\, delivers and demonstrates new data services and data-driven models for better supporting the decision making on planning on actions for adaptive\, resilient and sustainable management of freshwater resources. \nFocus of the STARS4Water special session:\nDuring this special session we will have an interactive dialogue between the audience and members of the panel (representing the scientific and river basin organisations community) to discuss the (hampering) uptake of available global data sources (incl. remote sensing) into current river basin planning and climate adaptation studies on the river basin scale. \nBased on several questions and propositions\, we will discuss the needs of stakeholders in river basins and what knowledge and innovative developments are needed to unlock the full potential of new and under-used datasets that support their work and decision making. Four panellists are invited to provide their experience and knowledge on this topic. Audience members are invited to comment and formulate questions based on their own experiences. \nThe session starts with a short introduction of the ambition of the STARS4Water project and a sneak preview of the new metadataportal supporting river basin management that is under development in the project. \nSession Programme:\nTo download the session programme click here. \n
